Work Underway at Site of Landfill Expansion
FIRST REPORTED 5:30am 5/30/11 The Knox County Landfill will expand in the next couple of years.

During last week's county board meeting, members discussed how new land purchased by the board last year for $786,000 will come on line for use at the landfill.

Landfill Administrator Jerry Reynolds says quite a few steps have to take place.

"Well as you know we purchased 74 acres earlier this year to extend the life of the landfill and they're(Andrew's) predicting that what we purchased will extend the life of the landfill probably another 40 to 50 years. As part of that process we have to get a permit from the state of Illinois in order to operate that landfill."

Andrews Engineering estimates the cost of permitting will be about $690,000 in total, with about $583,000 of that due this year along.

They anticipate the land will be ready for use by at least the end of 2013.
