First Civil Unions in Illinois Can Happen Thursday
(IRN)-Illinois' civil union law is about to go into effect.

Wednesday is the first day the couples wishing to enter civil unions can apply for a license at their county clerk's office, and with a one business day waiting period, Thursday is the day that actual civil unions will begin.

Civil unions allow couples who are not married to gain the benefits of marriage under state law. Civil unions have no bearing under federal law, and may not be recognized in other states.

The group Lambda Legal has set up a website at www.LambdaLegal.org/IllinoisTracker to sniff out any problems with enforcement of the law, either by government officials or by private organizations such as hospitals, etc., who must respect civil unions when it comes to visitation rights, medical decisions, etc.

Senior attorney Christopher Clark says no problems are expected, and based on the situation in Iowa, which allows same-sex marriages, few will occur.
