15 New Gale Scholars Selected
Fifteen eighth graders were inducted Tuesday into the George Washington Gales Scholarship program.

The academic program provides mentoring and support to students through out their high school years then provides a tuition waiver for two years at Carl Sandburg College and two years at Knox College.

Les Hunter is director of the program and remarked during the induction ceremony that the 15 new scholars would receive a certificate for being selected, but it is symbolic of much more.

"You'll hear me continue to talk about that ticket of opportunity," he said. "Now let me tell you what I by that, the ticket to opportunity is this; a college degree -- tuition free. Let me tell you first what that college degree is not, I don't think it makes you any better or any smarter than anyone else, but I do believe it gives opportunities that those without a college degree may not have."

Hunter says the Gale Scholars program opens doors and provides choices for kids who might not otherwise even consider college.

Ten girls and five boys were picked for the program. The 15 selected are: Bryce Fenton, MayCee Fox, Ashleah Hainline, Trinity Hathaway, and Denzel Haywood, Sabrina Keith, Jordonna Kidd, Erin Mallory, Tallen McWilliams, Makaliah Mitchell, Destiny Plowman, Teresa Ricks, Easton Salsman, Antoine, Starks, and Ryan Wood.

Hunter also noted that since the programs inception in 1996, 11 students have graduated from Knox College with four more on the way next month.
