River Level Falls in Cairo But Not Out of the Woods
(IRN)-The river level is going down at Cairo, but Illinois' flood emergency is a long way from over.

Cairo is still evacuated, and voluntary evacuations are in effect along the Ohio River at Metropolis, Brookport, Golconda, Old Shawneetown and Elizabethtown, where property is still threatened.

The levees and flood walls, where they exist, are still under a lot of stress. In Cairo, the water level, though down off its high, is still higher than it ever was before this week.

The river is expected to crest Thursday at Metropolis, where there is no levee. That city is under a voluntary evacuation, though residents are still sand-bagging around their homes. Many smaller creeks and lakes have overflowed, closing roads and inundating property in Southern Illinois.

Patti Thompson of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency says rain continues up-river in the Ohio River basin. The Army Corps of Engineers is reducing the flow of the Ohio River in its Pittsburgh district in hopes of easing flooding downstream.

The Ohio River situation is affecting travel. The U.S. 51 bridge at Cairo is closed, as is the U.S. 45 bridge at Brookport. The I-57 and I-24 bridges are open. Parts of Route 1 in Hardin and Gallatin counties are closed.
