Nearly 18,000 IL Burials Recorded Electronically
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois officials are reporting that 17,900 burials have been electronically recorded in a statewide database.

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation said Tuesday that nearly 75 percent of all burials are being entered into the database created six months ago by the Cemetery Oversight Act.

The database provides a place for families to go if they cannot find a loved one's grave. It became law after the scandal at Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip, where authorities discovered in 2009 that graves were reused, some bodies dumped and records were ill-kept.

Cemeteries entering data into the computerized program pay an average of $1.80 per burial.
