Knoxville Students Help Afghanistan
A lot of attention has been given this week to other issues going on the middle east, but one that's been going on for a long time got the attention of students at Knoxville Junior High School, and they wanted to do something to help.

Students in Chris Duncan's 6th Grade Advanced Literature class raised $350 in solely change that will be donated to a program called "Pennies for Peace", which helps students in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Duncan tells WGIL the students had been reading the Greg Mortenson book
"Three Cups of Tea", about the author's time in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and were called to action.

"As they were reading the book they realized that there are people who aren't as fortunate as they are and they going to school and using sticks to write in the dirt and they didn't have coverings. It's a penny for a pencil and a teacher costs three dollars a day so they thought that everyone should have an opportunity to have an education."

The students, Duncan says, raised the money by collecting change every day from fellow students, by going to local businesses, and through their churches.

The class hauled all the change to a local bank Wednesday to get cashed in.
