Kirk: Pakistan Knew of bin Laden Residence
CHICAGO (AP) -- Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk contends the Pakistani government was "probably fully aware" Osama bin Laden was living in that country.

Kirk made that assertion while meeting Friday with the editorial board of the Chicago Tribune. The senator attended the meeting shortly after returning from a fact-finding mission in Somalia.

Despite his belief, Kirk told the Tribune he is opposed to cutting off U.S. aid to Pakistan. He contends such a move would be short-sighted because supplies for U.S. troops operating in Afghanistan come through Pakistan.

Pakistani military leaders say the raid has exacerbated tensions between the U.S. and Pakistan. They are expressing anger over not being told about the raid on a target within its territory.

There are suspicions in Washington that bin Laden was protected by Pakistani security forces.
