Local Business Expanding with Help from City Council
The Galesburg City Council has essentially given its blessing to a business on the city's westernmost end expanding.

Aldermen this week approved an appeal of a decision by the city's Overall Code Review Commission meaning Thrushwood Farms won't have to install fire sprinklers in the 14-thousand square foot expansion, because owner Jim Hankes says they're hard to properly sterilize under USDA standards.

Otherwise, Hankes told aldermen he's expanding his business differently than others lately.

"We are doing this project without any financial help from an outside source," Hankes said. "We didn't come to the city asking for the money. We're doing that with our own funds that we worked 35 years to acquire."

Hankes, who wants to add some jobs to start with the expansion, says he's been courted by communities from all over the area including Burlington, Morton, and the Quad Cities, but is so far choosing to stay here, even though his son Doug looked hard at moving.

Fire department officials did not comment at the meeting, but Hankes says if he didn't feel the project was safe for his family, he wouldn't do it.
