Local Lawmaker Says Some Big Goals Loom
An Illinois lawmaker says he and his colleagues in Springfield are now in the final push.

74th District State Representative Don Moffitt says he still believes that lawmakers will adjourn the Spring legislative session on time at the end of the month, and with a budget being passed, while a simple majority is still needed.

Moffitt tells the WGIL Morning News cutting programs and benefits is painful, but it's necessary to have a stable and sound budget.

"The reality is we cannot continue on the track that we're on," Moffitt said. "Expenditures are growing, faster than revenues. A year ago taxes were increased, the state income tax."

"And simply, we cannot sustain the spending trends that we've been on over a decade. And that's the reality."

Moffitt says the proposed budget sets aside $1.5 billion dollars towards a nine billion dollar backlog in unpaid bills. He says Republicans and Democrats have agreed to $33.7 billion dollars in estimated revenue for 2013 Fiscal Year.

According to Moffitt, legislative leaders will likely adjourn an approved budget after ten consecutive days in Springfield on May 31st.
