Dental Day Deemed a Success
The second annual Free Adult Dental Day hosted by the Knox County Health Department has been deemed a success, and not just by the numbers.

Administrators told the Knox County Board of Health Thursday night that 160 patients were seen during the dental day last Friday at the Carl Sandburg College Annex -- 20 more than last year -- doing nearly 60-thousand dollars worth of various types of dental work.

Family Health Services Director Rhonda Peterson says that's not all that made the day positive.

"I think the people this year were even more grateful than last year if you can believe it," Peterson said. "Because they were very grateful last year too but this year they were all in such good moods, (saying) we'll sit here all day it doesn't matter."

"Of course we did feed them a little bit this time too, so that helped their mood."

About 50 people were turned away because time ran out on the day -- mostly, Peterson says, people who showed up in the afternoon versus first thing in the morning. They were given vouchers for a free teeth cleaning.

The Board of Health Thursday night also approved Doctor Kevin Satisky as a new board of health member, replacing Doctor Tommy West. West and another longtime member -- Doctor Lance Renfroe -- are stepping down later this month, leaving one more seat to fill, that of a dentist.
