City Council Approves Rules for High Tunnels
The Galesburg City Council will consider in under two weeks a proposal that would allow homeowners to do some growing a bit more advanced than the backyard garden.

Aldermen heard earlier this week about proposals amending both the city's Development Ordinance and its Building Code that would allow high tunnels to be constructed inside city limits.

They're often described as unheated greenhouses that can essentially allow the growing season.

6th Ward Alderman Wayne Allen says while most think of metal structures, he would like to see bamboo thought of.

"When we were going through this ordinance, and making all the changes and making sure that everything fit, we didn't realize that one of our local businesses was going to get into the business," he said. "And that local business happens to be in the bamboo business. So we'd like to amend the ordinance to also include structures with bamboo."

That company might be Lamboo, Incorporated, located in the Sustainable Business Center.

City officials determined that bamboo high tunnels would be acceptable without having to make any further amendments.

A final vote will come May 21st.
