Galesburg Targeting Aquaponics Industry
The city of Galesburg could soon be home to an aquaponics facility.

Gary Camarano is the Global Strategies Director for The Entrepreneurs, Business, and Innovators Network. He recently toured a leader in the sustainable industry-- Chicago's 312 Aquaponics. Camarano says the business provides a closed loop system of fresh fish production like talapia and plant growth from the fresh water.

A news release from the EBI Network indicates Camarano is seeking investors willing to establish an aquaponics facility in the region, and perhaps at Galesburg's Sustainable Business Center.

He says an indoor aquatic farm would contribute to the 'Grow Local' movement by allowing for annual production, locally sourced foods, job creation, and an efficient use of resources. According to Camarano, transforming some of Galesburg's existing industrial space into an aquaponics farm could be a logical add-on to the area's agriculture.

Mayor Sal Garza says Galesburg has an advantage over major urban environments in attracting new sustainable industries because of lower facility pricing. He says 312 Aquaponics could even possibly provide consultation for a start up aquaponics facility.

Because of Galesburg's central location, Garza says an aquaponics farm could serve several major metropolitan markets year-round like Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Louis.
