Letter Carriers Collecting Non-Perishables Saturday
Postal workers throughout the country Saturday will be collecting non-perishable food items for what's the largest single day food drive in the nation.

Saturday is the National Association of Letter Carriers' 20th Annual "Stamp Out Hunger" Food Drive. Local-88 Letter Carrier Toni Ball says postal trucks will scan for food at mailboxes early on, and a second go-around will be made by actual mail carriers at normal delivery time.

She tells the WGIL Morning News 'ready-to-make' meals are the appropriate items to set out.

"Something children can make," Ball said. "And that's what I want people to think about, what do your kids eat, what do they like to make?" Ravioli, spaghettios, soups, they need fruits and vegetables--the canned ones, not anything fresh."

"They cannot take anything fresh, and they can also can not take anything homemade. So if grandma likes to make jelly, we can not take it unfortunately-- (even) as much as we would like to eat grandma's jelly."

And nothing expired either, says Ball. She says it's better if the donated goods are picked up as early as possible so the FISH Food Pantry volunteers have ample time to sort, box, and weigh the items.

According to Ball, 16,000 people were served last year, and 14,000 children alone are expected to benefit from the food drive this year. She says the goal is to fill the pantry though the summer months.
