Congressman Tending to Veterans Needs
One local lawmaker hosted a unique forum Saturday aimed at providing important information on benefits and processes for veterans.

17th District Congressman Bobby Schilling was at Galesburg's American Legion Saturday meeting with more than a hundred vets. The Colona Republican tells WGIL these events are vital for veterans to get the care and attention they deserve.

"We did one of these in Moline last year and it was very successful," he said. "We were able to get some information to some of our veterans that, quite forwardly, they didn't know some of those benefits were available to them. So this is really sharing information and knowledge that Mr. Honeycutt has because he's in charge of the VA (Veterans Affairs) in Illinois here."

Between Duane Honeycutt and Dawn Oxley, the Acting Director of the Iowa City V-A Health Care System, Schilling says veterans left the Legion Saturday with a better understanding of how to streamline their claims.

Schilling's opponent for the November general election was also in town Saturday at an un-related event, Democrat Cheri Bustos. When told she was campaigning, he said that's good because, quote, "she doesn't get out much."
