Health Department Loses WIC Money in One Area, But Gains in Another
What the Knox County Health Department is losing in terms of money that's in one state grant, it will likely gain in another.

Health Department Family Health Services Director Rhonda Peterson says the health department will be getting $16,000 less from the Women, Infants, and Children program this year. That's based on $208,000 received last year.

But Peterson says some of that will be coming back, for taking part in a new pilot program also dealing with nutrition.

"It's mostly education, which we do with the WIC clients anyway," Peterson said. "It's getting the most for your food and WIC dollars. So, it's going to be showing them how to use their food dollars wisely, buying probably bigger portions of meat and trying to cut it at home into smaller packaging -- things like that."

The grant is for $10,000. Peterson says she anticipates working with the University of Illinois Extension and the health department's own garden as components in the education.

Knox County is one of only two counties statewide that's taking part in the pilot program.
