Orpheum Theatre Upgrades Delayed a Year
Major upgrades to the Orpheum Theatre's heating and air conditioning systems will wait at least another full year.

The Knox County Civic Center Authority Board Wednesday voted to pursue the heating and cooling upgrades in 2013 instead of this year, because theatre head Josh Damewood says the contractor says the two-and-a-half month window blocked off later this summer won't work. Damewood says the contractor needs at least four months instead.

But that's led to concern that some of the theatre's regular tenants would be inconvenienced next June, July, August, and September -- such as Prairie Players Civic Theatre, Choral Dynamics, and the Knox-Galesburg Symphony.

"Is there some letter that should come from Jan [Occhi] -- because we don't want to leave Josh [Damewood] in the middle -- basically explaining the dilemma that we're in, as a board, that we can't be specific, that we do appreciate the support that we have, and we've always had?"

That's CCA board member and theatre volunteer Naomi Law. Board chairperson Jan Occhi agreed to write and send out a letter to renting organizations explaining the situation, and that the upgrades would be beneficial to both theatre patrons and those who have shows there.

Occhi stressed that no one renting organization is more important than another.
