| Local Political Activist Hands Over Resolution to City |
An advocate against Citizens United has tailored a Los Angeles resolution denouncing a 2010 Supreme Court decision to fit the city of Galesburg. Jerry Ryberg is now awaiting when Mayor Sal Garza will schedule a special City Council meeting to discuss a vote on supporting the reversal of the decision essentially allowing unlimited campaign donations by big businesses. He tells WGIL Garza must do so because he has four signatures from alderman petitioning for the meeting, one more than what's required.
"The mayor will set a meeting, that's the rules," Ryberg said. "The mayor now has to set a meeting, schedule a special meeting. And people can be there. People can come and comment."
Ryberg says he has powerful words in store for Monday night's City Council meeting, and he hopes Garza sets a special date then. Those council members supporting Ryberg's resolution include Wayne Dennis, Corine Andersen, Peter Schwartzman, and Jeremy Karlin-- but not all are equally as willing. "Three of them (are) very willing. One of them (is) not totally on board yet, but I suspect that he will vote with us."
City officials confirm there's one alderman who's confessed he doesn't understand what he even signed up for. Ryberg disputes this claim, stating he's clarified his intentions several times with the city's brass. Ryberg is aiming to put an end to unlimited campaign spending by corporations. He plans to shut out the notion that corporations are people, as brought about by the Citizens United decision. |
