Police Ease Sterling's Fears After Murder
STERLING, Ill. (AP) -- The police department of the city where an alleged victim of Nicholas Sheley lived has launched a program designed to ease the fears of local residents.

Sterling police Lt. Doug Fargher says the 2008 murder of 93-year-old Russell Reed had the town's residents concerned for their safety. Sheley is also accused of killing seven other people in a two-state crime spree.

Fargher says city leaders came up with a list of goals to lift the shadow caused by the murder. One of them was for police to go door to door just to say hello and open lines of communication.

Fargher says the department has averaged 90 to 100 homes a month since the program began last April.

Fargher says residents who feared opening the door are now doing so.
