Lake Storey Beach to Open Again
The Galesburg City Council has voted to officially re-open Lake Storey beach, just in time for the season starting this weekend.

Aldermen Monday voted seven-to-one for re-opening the beach on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, through the season starting Memorial Day. This, after aldermen approved a budget for the current year that kept the beach closed.

Seventh Ward Alderman Jeremy Karlin turned out to be the lone "no" vote, though other aldermen seemed like they might vote that way, too. Karlin says there are other ways the city's residents can enjoy water without having to pay for it.

"I don't see this as a priority for the city, in providing inexpensive or even free water recreation for people who can't afford those for pay," Karlin said. "We have many wading pools and other places within the community people can go to that are free, that are also safe.

Several aldermen said they wanted statistics kept on how many people show up at the beach every day it's open, and how many of those swim, wanting to determine if the beach really is that poorly-attended.

Other aldermen cited concern over geese droppings at the lake and the concern over e. coli contamination, which has closed the beach a few times the last several years.

$80,000 from the city's contingency fund will pay for the beach to re-open, something else Karlin objected to.
