Congressman Meets with Galesburg Small Business Owners
Building what one local lawmaker calls "the backbone of America" was the subject of a small business roundtable Thursday.

17th District Congressman Bobby Schilling sat with area small business owners inside the Galesburg Commerce Center. Representation from both Knox and Carl Sandburg College was also present.

Schilling tells WGIL Thursday's discussion featured embrace for what Galesburg's done to sustain economic growth.

"What they've (Galesburg) done is they've diversified their portfolio so to speak," Schilling said. "They have a lot of small businesses and really trying to attract people into the area was one of their (small business owners present Thursday) big questions."

And also maintaining those businesses, Schilling says. He says less taxes and less federal regulation will allow businesses of any size to thrive.

Galesburg-Area Chamber of Commerce President Bob Maus says the Colona Republican supports what's right for small businesses. He most appreciated Schilling's compassion.

"What I really took away form this meeting though is his very sincere effort to work with both side of the aisle," Maus said. "(And to) forget about who's a democrat and a republican-- and to quote his own terms, 'Let's approach this as Americans and come up with some solutions."

Schilling himself has owned a pizza shop in Moline for fifteen years. He says other owners value his perspective because, quote, "he get's it."

National Small Business Week concludes Saturday.
