Growing Structures Now Allowed in Galesburg
You now have another option if you want to do some growing in your own backyard in Galesburg.

The Galesburg City Council this week approved changes to the building code and the city's development ordinance to allow the construction of high tunnel structures.

They're described by some as unheated greenhouses that can allow gardeners to have a longer growing season -- something that can be beneficial to people who grow for farmers markets, for example.

City Community Development Director Roy Parkin says owners of a high tunnel structure have to get a building permit.

"One just to make sure that we're tracking them," Parkin said. "And more specifically, so that the property owner that moves in understands what the requirements are for high tunnel structures in regards to maintaining them properly, not using them for illegal purposes, maintaining them on an extended period-- not just one year and then leaving them vacant."

"(It's) so we can advise the owners at the time what the requirements are for the high tunnel structurers."

Parkin says among the regulations is that no floor is required but there are some regulations if a floor is necessary. The city also requires that high tunnel structures be pre-manufactured.

Aldermen this week rejected security fencing for the city's two water towers -- this, despite the fact they've been past targets of graffiti.
