City Council Approves Grade Crossing Work
Some work will be done around some railroad crossings that will eventually be targeted for closure as the city attempts to get federal "Quiet Zone" status.

Aldermen this week approved on a six-to-one vote, with another alderman abstaining, 105-thousand dollars worth of bids from Galesburg's AEH Construction for work around the Chambers, Mulberry, and North Pearl Street crossings.

The lone "no" vote came from 7th Ward Alderman Jeremy Karlin, who questioned the use of chain-link protective fencing that will show up in part of the area.

"Surely we could have done it nicer," Karlin said. We're going to have a lot of these throughout our community and having areas where we're having chain-link fence up certainly isn't aesthetically pleasing. And surely there is a way to be creative, and I think we could be, to handle these closures in a way that are aesthetically pleasing."

The fencing is being put up, the city says, in order to discourage pedestrian traffic across the railroad crossing there.

The abstention was cast by Third Ward Alderman Russell Fleming, who did not explain why.

Construction will be done in June, which also includes end of road treatments in that area.
