Knoxville Schools' Lunches to Cost More
Lunches will cost more for Knoxville students when they return to school in August.

The District-202 Board of Education formally approved raising prices by twenty-five cents Wednesday night. Superintendent Steve Wilder says the move should offset the uncertainty of future food costs.

"After continuing to look at lunch prices and trying to estimate food costs for next year, we're still pretty unclear as to what the increases is going to be in terms of food costs," Wilder said. "After seeing what other local school systems are doing, I'm recommending an increase of a quarter across the board for elementary, junior high, and high school lunch prices."

Wilder says the increase also satisfies the requirement under the National School Lunch Program. He says breakfast items will remain priced the same.

School board member John Putnam asked Wednesday if the district has ever considered utilizing satellite kitchens and making all food from scratch. Putnam says it could save District-202 large amounts of money.

Wilder says the district's food service director has worked under such a system before. He says the idea could be further developed as the design of a new Knoxville high school evolves.
