Our Nation's Fallen Soldiers Remembered
Monday marks a federal holiday that's true to it's roots-- remembering those who've died fighting for our freedom.

Monday is Memorial Day, and the area will be rich with several observances recognizing fallen members of the United States Armed Forces.

VFW Post 22-57 is among the sponsors for Galesburg's annual Memorial Day parade through downtown Main Street. Like always, Quartermaster Mike Lummis tells the WGIL Morning News it culminates with a ceremony on the courthouse lawn.

"Jack Harlan, of Knoxville, will be the speaker this year, and Bill Henderson is the Grand Marshal of the parade," Lummis said. "As tradition states, we will be reading the names of the area veterans that have passed and entered their final roll call since last Memorial Day, that's always kind of a tribute."

Lummis says the public is invited to attend a free-will offering of lunch at the VFW following the ceremony.

Later on at 3 pm, there will be a service at the Lincoln Park Veteran's Memorial in Galesburg. Other area cemeteries are hosting services as well. There's even an annual bicycle parade in Knoxville at 8 am.
