Hundreds of Youngsters Embark on Dozens of Trucks
The kids weren't letting the weather dampen their Wednesday morning at Lake Storey Pavillion.

Hundreds of children turned out for the 12th annual Touch a Truck, which included fire trucks, ambulances, tractors, and other large utility vehicles. But what is it about the fascination youngsters have for trucks?

"They just like big things. They like to get in them, honk the horns, and turn the lights on."

That's Mitchell Wiley, driver of the Hostess Brand truck. He was handing out 1,000 Twinkies to all the children.

Tom Egan was showing off a massive tractor from Kleine Equipment.

"The big tires are one of the major things they like, they always like to take their picture in front of the big tires and wheels," Egan said. "And this one, they like to get up in the seat because it's real high up so they can look around at everybody."

Now the threat of lighting did keep some trucks from fully engaging the children with their vehicles, like the use of bucket trucks.

Melissa Nelson with the Galesburg Department of Forestry tells WGIL there was STILL an incentive for kids to stop by.

"Ya, they'll come for the tootsie rolls," Nelson said.

The meaning of the Touch a Truck event was put best by Ameren Gas Supervisor Fred McMaster-- who said, "It's all about the kids."
