Fundraising and Plans Move Ahead for Rotary Park Upgrades
Fundraising is going well for an expansion of a local park.

The Galesburg City Council recently approved applying for a state grant that would pay for half of the 660-thousand dollars worth of planned upgrades to Rotary Park, being done to coincide with the Rotary Club's 100th anniversary in 2014.

Plans include a spray park and a new parking lot.

The Galesburg Community Foundation is holding the money for the local fundraising being done. Executive Director Josh Gibb says fundraising could surpass 450-thousand dollars, but not all that would go into the park.

"The fund agreement actually details out what they would like to do if they are able to raise extra funds," Gibb said. "And what they intend to do is create an endowment that would be used for other park projects and renovations, not just Rotary Park, but park projects throughout the entire community of Galesburg."

Some residents near Rotary Park still expressed concern about the project. Some said as early as 2010 they were okay with the improvements, as long as they weren't so close to their homes.

The Galesburg Pilot Club is participating in the project with the Rotary Clubs.

The city could learn about the grant application by fall.
