Housing Authority Approves Bid for Abingdon Site Improvements
By midsummer, public housing in Abingdon will have undergone a facelift worth over a third of a million dollars.

At least that's the hopes of Knox County Authority Board Executive Director Margie Hulick. The Board of Commissioners Thursday morning formally approved a bid at just under $370,000 dollars from Hein Construction to rehab portions of the parking, landscape, and also patios of Blue Bell Tower and Whispering Hollow.

Hulick tells WGIL she's happy to be moving forward with these plans.

"These are all improvements that we hope to just make it more comfortable for them (the residents)," Hulik said. "They've been in our five-year plan for several years that we've moved over due to priorities. So this year we were able to get those in this bid packet. It ought to be very nice for them."

The bid includes six alternates, with the third being a $5,000 dollar deduction from Hein's original offer. Hulick says the board agreed it'd be more cost-effective to have concrete laid instead of asphalt for the parking lot improvements.

Also at Thursday's special meeting, the board authorized workers to examine Knox's public housing family sites as part of a weatherization contract. The contract is at the expense of the Carver Community Action Agency, and includes possible window, furnace, and other amenity replacement where needed.
