Area Dentists Helping Those in Need
The Knox County Health Department's second annual Adult Dental Day was again not something taken for granted Friday by those without dental coverage.

Dr. Dan Kasper is an oral surgeon that was responsible for pulling teeth at the Carl Sandburg College Annex. He says dental care insurance isn't considered a benefit like health insurance is today-- instead it's more of a privilege.

Kasper tells WGIL he was happy to give adults that privilege in the dental chair Friday because it's not often they get that opportunity.

"I think these people are very appreciative; I've never had them not be appreciative of this kind of access to this kind of care," Kasper said. "It's a good sign of the dental professionals int his community, who make themselves readily available to provide this care."

Kasper says those without dental insurance, many of those in today, often fall between the cracks. He says failing dental health can lead to more serious inflammatory infections and diseases throughout the body.

Before the day ended, the health department's Erin Olson said the goal was to see as many people as possible. They did just that-- exceeding last year's total of 141 adults, to approximately 163 this year.
