Galesburg Man Accused of Battering Child Appointed Attorney
A Galesburg man arrested last weekend at his East Fifth Street home for allegedly battering a 10-week-old baby was assigned a public defender Friday.

In Larry Pearcy's first appearance in Knox County Circuit Court, Judge Paul Mangieri appointed Karl Johnson to represent the 26-year-old. Pearcy is accused of shaking a baby so violently back on April 21st that the infant was life-flighted to a Peoria hospital. State troopers indicated a week ago the child was recovering and would return home soon.

Felony charges filed against Pearcy include two counts of Aggravated Battery of a Child, one a Class-X, the other a Class-Three, and Aggravated Domestic Battery.

Pearcy alertly approached the bench Friday morning after having his head buried in his hand-cuffed hands prior to the start of proceedings. He asked Judge Mangieri to consider reducing his bond, to which the judge responded he'd have to first consult with Johnson.

A motion to lower Pearcy's $250,000 bond could be taken up as early as Monday, his next scheduled date in court. Until then, he remains detained in Knox County Jail.
