Restoration Coming for Monmouth Historic District
Six buildings with rich historical significance are going to be restored in the southeast quadrant of Monmouth's Public Square.

June first, Cedar Rapids-based Frantz-Hobart will begin rejuvenating the old Model clothing store, Maple City Realty, the Second National Bank, the former Coconuts buildings, and a small one on Market Alley.

Director of Community Development in Monmouth Paul Schuytema tells WGIL bringing these buildings up to code and establishing a cash-flow on each floor will enable them to become more functional in the modern economy.

"If we can kind of grow out from that organically and tackle six buildings on that block, then we've got a magnet to attract some higher-end retail, which we couldn't normally get downtown," he said. "Plus then we can start growing a residential population."

"And those two two things together are really going to help catalyze other efforts downtown."

Schuytema says the spacious loft-style apartments will be aimed at retirees, returning Monmouth College alumni or current students, and young professionals.

It's a $2 million dollar project, financed by the developer and Midwest Bank locally. Gap funding is being provided by the city's Building Grant Fund and TIF monies.

According to Schuytema, Frantz-Hobart is committed to making Monmouth a more attractive place and is sensitive to the historic restoration of buildings.
