|Abingdon Uniforms Go Up for Bid
|There was a good chance many parents got the uniforms their kids wore in the final years of the athletic program at the Abingdon School District.
Now that the school and athletic years are over, the district is just about a month away from officially consolidating with Avon, meaning Abingdon Commandos uniforms had to go. The district held a silent auction for most items Saturday.
Abingdon Athletic Director Joe Nichols oversaw the auction and tells WGIL the interest prior to the auction was great.
"We received several phone calls, several e-mails, wanting to know how we were going to dispose of [the uniforms] as early as November," Nichols said. "Once the [consolidation election] vote went through, everybody assumed we weren't going to be Commandos anymore. So, they were on it. They wanted their uniforms. They wanted some kind of Commando history."
People like Tami Bowen. "My son plays football here," Bowen said. "He's a Senior this coming year, and I wanted last year's uniform for his Senior pictures."
Nichols and several parents we talked with said they felt the silent auction was the fairest way to dispose of the uniforms.
But parent Darrin Poland tells WGIL he thinks a lot of time and energy has been wasted through the silent auction process.
"With everything that's transpiring right now, I'd have never voted for it if I had known all this was going to happen," Poland said. "They're going to waste a lot of money on the sports program. They should put it in the education program. The sports program will take care of itself. There's some people that have got their own agendas, I think."
Poland's son is in the Air Force Academy and he wanted to get his son's uniform as a gift.
He says he thinks the district could have had two separate athletic identities for the Middle and High School levels, keeping both school district's mascots in tact.
Poland says he tried to give the district top dollar for his son's uniform, and they wouldn't take it.
