Help Arrives as Levees Break in Henderson, Mercer

Sandbagging efforts continue along the Mississippi River, and officials are encouraging residents of Keithsburg to evacuate as communities across Illinois continue to deal with flood waters they already have, and brace for more.

The National Weather Service is forecasting rain across much of the already drenched state on Sunday, and weather officials caution that already flooded rivers will continue to rise.

Governor Rod Blagojevich has called up 400 Illinois Army National Guard soldiers from Galesburg, Macomb, Milan and other locations to help with sandbagging along the Mississippi River. Blagojevich is also directing the Illinois Emergency Management Agency to continue efforts to assist officials in Mercer and Henderson Counties after levees at Kethsburg and Carman broke Saturday. The governor's office says staff from IEMA's regional office is on site at Keithsburg to coordinate requests for state assistance.

The American Red Cross has established shelters for flood victims, including one at the Keithsburg Christian Church and one at West Central's North Campus in Biggsville for Henderson County residents.

The governor has declared 15 Illinois counties as disaster areas, including Henderson, Mercer, Hancock and Rock Island counties.
