Abingdon School Board Approves Paving Bid

After holding off to gather more information, the Abingdon School Board okayed a bid for work at the two District 217 schools.

The board learned during its regular monthly meeting last week that only one bid was submitted for paving and resurfacing the parking lots at Hedding Grade School and the Middle/High School. The nearly $459,000 bid from Gunther Construction came in $78,000 dollars over budget, prompting the board to seek an explanation from the firm as to why the bid was so high.

School board members, representatives from the district's architect and officials from the construction company met last Monday morning during a special board meeting, and an agreement was reached. The board approved a bid not to exceed $412,900, to be paid for out of health/life/safety funds. Board members were faced with a tough choice: accept the bid that's over budget; or reject it, start over and possibly pay more for the project because of sky high fuel and oil prices.

Barring any hold-ups, the paving and resurfacing is expected to be complete by the start of the new school year.
