205 Board Tables Milk Price Hike

At least two Galesburg School Board members say they don't get how the district's food service provider can essentially change the rules in the middle of the game.

The District-205 board tabled a proposal at a special meeting Monday night to increase milk prices by a dime a carton. The district says that's about what Aramark would be losing cost-wise due to increased salaries and benefits.

Those increases were realized as part of a new one-year contract extension the District-205 board okayed a few weeks ago, and board member Robert Lindstrom says Aramark should have thought about it then.

"Doesn't that contract having pricing in it?  And it was increased, like, four percent, so it seems to me that we cut our deal with Aramark in May.  So why are we coming back a month later because they're losing money...a deal's a deal I think."

One other board member agreed. Aramark has said they would either increase the cost of ala carte lunch items, or reduce the number of those items, if the milk price increase wasn't approved.

The board will discuss the proposal at their meeting next month, once board members have had the chance to review the contract with Aramark.

The District-205 board Monday night did vote to reject all bids for the proposed construction of locker rooms at Lombard Middle School, approved changes to the elementary and secondary codes of conduct without discussion, and approved utilizing the Prairie State Insurance Cooperative as the district's insurance provider.
