AFSCME Rally in Springfield

The union covering 35-thousand state employees, including those at local offices in Galesburg, say if the Governor wants to brag about being the "Health Care Governor," he should think about the people whose paychecks he signs, too.

Members of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees protested at the State Capitol in Springfield Monday, one-week before a contract with them expires, following similar protests at local offices a month ago including at the Department of Human Services offices in Galesburg.

AFSCME Council 31 Executive Director Henry Bayer says the state's employees should be treated as well as the Governor treats the rest of the state's residents who need help with health insurance.

AFSCME has said increased out-of-pocket expenses for health care and pension costs by the unionized employees are the reasons for the contract hang-up, while the Governor's office has declined to comment.

The current contract expires on Monday, and the state's employees have never worked without a contract.
