Stone-Hayes Legislative Internship Graduation
The Stone-Hayes Center for Independent Living (CIL) held a special ceremony to honor graduates of the 2008 Legislative Internship Program on May 28th.

The Legislative Internship Program, which started in 1999, is an important program within the Stone-Hayes organization, providing individuals with disabilities skills in leadership, advocacy and communication. This years graduates included: Edgar Cameron, Sharon Cassell, Tabitha Cooper, Lisa Corps, Maurice Fox, Anita Hampton, Jennifer Harris, Keith Munstedt, and Nicole Vallero, all from Galesburg and Mitch Peterson and Melissa Sage from Monmouth.

The class participated in a 16-week long program designed to teach disability rights, advocacy and how the government works. The class also attended the Statewide Disability Rights/Independent Living Conference in Springfield at the end of April to network and learn from experts and advocates across the state. The Class of 2008 made a presentation outlining their Class Project to an audience of local and state dignitaries, friends and family members.

The class chose the Illinois Disability Vote Project as their focus for the next six months. The Legislative Internship Program is one of several programs offered free of charge to people with disabilities in Knox, Warren and Henderson Counties.
