USDA: Crop Report Looks Good, Flooding Not Yet a Factor
Although last week held stories of thousands of acres of farmland flooded after levee breaks, the overall Illinois crop progress report is looking better than it has so far this year.

Brad Schwab, USDA crop statistician, says the statistics don't yet fully reflect the flooding in parts of Illinois, but says on average, farmers had nearly six days of good weather for working in the fields. Corn stands at an average 22 inches tall. Last year's crop stood at 49 inches at this time. The five-year average was 40 inches.

Soybeans are 75 percent emerged, as opposed to lat year's 97 percent tally and the 95 percent five-year average. Only 3 percent of wheat has been harvested, well behind last year's 63 percent and the 46 percent five-year average.

Statewide precipitation averaged a little more than a third of an inch, or 55-hundredths of an inch below normal. Western Illinois received just under a quarter of an inch of rain, and the temperature averaged 70 degrees---allowing for 5 days suitable for fieldwork.
