Official: $4 Gas May Help Railroad Days

The annual festival celebrating one of the biggest pieces of the City of Galesburg's history has officially begun. Carnival rides and some other activities are starting Thursday evening as part of Galesburg's 31st Annual Railroad Days, while the festival itself officially starts with opening ceremonies at 6pm Friday.

Railroad Days organizer Dennis Clark tells WGIL he's definitely thought recently about what impact there will be on attendance with gas near four-dollars a gallon in the area. "When you look at the kids, there's probably a lot of families that are not going to be traveling to Six Flags," Clark said, "We're going to have the carnial right in our backyard, so from that standpoint, it's maybe a plus for us."

In addition to things like the annual model train show, train displayes, and the Galesburg Railroad Museum being open all weekend long, Clark says the Galesburg Jaycees Annual Rib Cook-Off is increasing in popularity.

Other events throughout Railroad Days include a petting zoo, antique tractor displays, a toy show, and the bus tour of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Rail Yards.
