Flood Assistance Center at Monmouth College
The state of Illinois is establishing disaster recovery centers in three locations to help victims of this month's floods.

One of those locations is at Monmouth College in the Huff Athletic Center, where flood victims will be connected with state assistance programs that can help them begin the recovery process. The centers, which opened Friday at 8:30 am, will be staffed initially by state personnel, with a representative from FEMA available to provide information about registering for federal assistance.

State officials say people affected by the flooding can go to the centers and meet face to face with state agency reps about programs that are available to help them.

The flood assistance center in Monmouth will be open seven days a week, from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. until further notice.

President Bush earlier this week declared 14 Illinois counties federal disaster areas. They include Henderson and Mercer counties, which are among the areas that are to receive federal disaster assistance for people and businesses that suffered losses due to the flooding.

The federal declaration will allow flood victims to apply for temporary housing and grants or loans to help with flood losses. Businesses will also be able to apply for low-interest loans.
