New Trail Dedicated at Knox County Nursing Home
A project the Knox County Nursing Home has been working on for a year now is finally a reality. Officials cut the ribbon Sunday on the new "Prairie Trail" on the Nursing Home property in Knoxville, a project done with a nearly 50-thousand dollar grant from the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Knox County Nursing Home Administrator Mary Ann Wiesen tells WGIL the idea for a trail on the property started simply and just grew from there. "It started with just a piece of paper and my daughter doing some sketching," Wiesen said. "We were trying to come up with something that was innovative. The County Nursing Home already had open dining, already had the beauty shop, already had the jacuzzi spas. So it was like, what else can we do? I had done a lot of research on the value of the outdoors for the elderly, and how important it was to get out and enjoy the weather."

And more than just that, Wiesen says it will also be helpful to the home's residents with dementia, because of objects along the trail she says should hopefully trigger memories, like an old train car and 1903 tractor, the nursing home's animal farm, a pagoda that was a part of the old Saint Mary's College, and a grain house among other items.

The nature trail is open to the public, and can be seen by anyone pulling into the main entrance of the Nursing Home off Market Street in Knoxville.
