Unemployment Up in May
State officials say the slowing national economy and job losses are outweighing the resilience of the state's labor market, which has bumped up the unemployment rate in Illinois.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security's monthly unemployment report shows unemployment between April and May increased between one-tenth of a percentage point in Henry County to 4-tenths in Warren County. The City of Galesburg had the highest jobless rate in May at 6.2 percent, an increase of 3-tenths of a percent compared to the previous month. Knox County's rate went from 5.6 to 5.8, while unemployment in Fulton County increased from 5.4 percent in April to 5.8 in May. The rate in Henderson County was unchanged at 5.7 percent.

State officials say the Galesburg area, where unemployment was 5.6 percent in May, experienced an over-the-year decline in non-farm payroll jobs. The biggest decline was in the Leisure-Hospitality sector. Unemployment in May of 2007 was 4.4 percent, or 1.2 percent lower.

Galesburg and all nearby counties experienced higher unemployment rates between May of 2007 and 2008. The smallest increase was in Henderson County at a half a percentage point. Warren and Henry counties' rates went up a full percentage point, the Galesburg area and Fulton County increased 1.2 percent, and Knox County and Galesburg experienced a 1.3 percent jump in unemployment.

The state reports Illinois' over-the-month rate increase was the third highest in the nation.
