Knoxville Hires Part-time Police Officer to Fill Vacancy

After losing Ed Swearingen, the former chief of police in Abingdon, to deployment to Afghanistan this year, the Knoxville City Council is hiring a part time officer to fill the void.

The city council voted Monday night to hire Josh Kramer for the part-time officer position.

Knoxville City Clerk Peg Bivens says the hiring process for Kramer should be short and sweet. "Josh Kramer, who's already a certified police officer, so we'll just have to get him past our fit(ness) testing and employment physical...and he'll be good to go."

Kramer is currently employed with the Abingdon Police Department and is being hired for the position in Knoxville at the starting wage of a part-time officer.

The Knoxville City Council adopted the new fitness testing in April, which Kramer will have to pass, in an effort to reduce the number of workman's compensation claims and the number of injuries.
