Walgreens Robbery Suspect Arrested; Bond & New Court Date Set

Galesburg police have made an arrest in connection with an armed robbery reported last Friday at the Walgreens store on West Fremont Street.

Authorities say they arrested 55-year old Steven Jones of Galesburg around 6 pm Tuesday for armed robbery and robbery after a search warrant was executed at his residence on Duval Street, and his vehicle.

Police say evidence was recovered at the residence and in the vehicle linking Jones to the armed robbery, which was reported around 12:30 am last Friday by a Walgreens employee.

A woman working in the pharmacy department told police a man approached the counter and handed her a note telling her to remain calm and get all the OxyContin the pharmacy had. The suspect reportedly became upset when he couldn't see the employee who had gone to get the pills and jumped over a counter, pulled out a large knife and took the prescription drugs from her.Police were able to get a copy of the surveillance video, and had the note left by the suspect sent off to the crime lab in Morton to be tested for fingerprints.

Jones is being held in the Knox County Jail on $75,000 bond following a court appearance Wednesday afternoon. A judge ordered Jones not to have any contact with any Walgreens store should he post bond and be released. His next court date is Monday at 11am with the Knox County Public Defender.
