IDOT Crews Back on the Highways After Funding Approved

A supplemental appropriation for the state transportation department is enabling the agency to lift its suspension on picking up roadkill from the state's highways.

The agency stopped doing the job after exhausting its operating funds for this year, but operations are beginning to return to normal after the legislature approved the 20-million dollar appropriation last weekend. IDOT officials blamed record fuel prices and the use of extra road salt during the winter for using up all their funds.

State Representative Don Moffitt spoke up on the House floor about concerns he heard when IDOT suspended collecting roadkill and other items that made their way onto the roads, shortly after the supplemental vote was taken:

"We've gotten lots of calls in the office...IDOT ceased picking up the usual debris that they do along state roads, that includes animals that have been struck by cars, they're just being left on the shoulder, and the tires that come off of big trucks..."

Moffitt says not only is it unsightly and unhealthy, it's also unsafe.

IDOT also plans to use the funds to mow grass along highways, to trim trees and for emergency pothole patching.
