Local Man Facing Multiple Charges for Hit and Runs

Galesburg police believe a man was impaired when he allegedly left the scene of three separate hit and run accidents earlier this week.

Police reports say the first one happened around 9:30 p-m Wednesday when a vehicle hit a fence at Pleasant Avenue and North Street. A second involved the same vehicle striking a utility pole at Losey and Jefferson Streets, and in the third hit and run, the vehicle drove across and damaged a concrete median on North Henderson Street near Fremont Street.

Witnesses told police the person driving the vehicle went into an apartment at Parkway Estates on West Carl Sandburg Drive. Officers arrived there and arrested 23-year old Garren Cook, who was reportedly hiding in a closet.

Police say Cook was taken to a local hospital after he complained of pain in his back when he was arrested, and staff at the hospital told police he had drugs in his system.

Cook is facing two aggravated DUI charges, and single counts of DUI, driving on a suspended license, driving without auto insurance, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and failure to give information after striking property.
