State Investigating Rare Salmonella Strain
Two people in Illinois are hospitalized, sickened as part of a multi-state outbreak of salmonella. Illinois Department of Public Health spokeswoman Melaney Arnold says 17 cases of salmonella saintpaul have been confirmed in Illinois, and suggests that people be careful with produce, since that's where officials think this illness is found.

Such cases have also been found in at eight other states.

The Illinois Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that people take the following steps:

* Avoid buying bruised or damaged produce and discard any that appear spoiled
* Thoroughly wash all produce under running water
* Refrigerate within two hours any cut, peeled or cooked produce, otherwise discard
* Keep produce separate from raw meats and seafood. Clean countertops with hot water and soap when switching among foods.
