Part of Knox's Old Main is New Again
There was plenty of pomp and circumstance at this year's Knox College Commencement ceremonies, but besides three commencement speakers, a faculty award winner, and the 259 members of the Class of 2008, there was one other item Knox College President Roger Taylor wanted people to be sure they knew about.

Part of Saturday's commencement exercises were used to dedicate a brand new roof on Knox College's most famous building, Old Main. Taylor says the roof was probably the most visible sign of damage during a weather event most of us want to forget.

"Last August 23, while Old Main was quietly celebrating its 150th birthday, the corner of the roof was yanked up by 80 mile-per-hour winds," Taylor said. "But within 30 minutes, workers...who were engaged in another project on campus, were here to help lower the Old Main roof back in place."

Taylor says those crews came back last December, and worked throughout what he says were some of the worst winter weather conditions possible, to put the new roof on. He says in a sense, the college is now re-dedicating Old Main for another 150 years of service.

Saturday's commencement exercises, which you can hear online by clicking here, were also the official kickoff to a year full of celebrations in Galesburg marking the anniversary of the Lincoln-Douglas Debates, one of which was held at Old Main.
