Republicans Unhappy with State Budget

Local lawmakers say the state budget that was passed under-the-wire Saturday night, to say the least, leaves a lot to be desired.

The spending plan was approved before Sunday, when a larger majority would have been needed to pass it, and before an overtime session was needed.

74th District State Representative Don Moffitt says many of the concerns he's expressed in recent weeks about the state budget weren't solved this time either.  Moffitt says the budget increases spending by $2-billion over the current year despite the lack of adequate revenue to pay for it, and the state is still behind making Medicaid payments.

The issue of how to pay for the budget did come up, just not in the house. The Senate passed a number of measures that would take care of most of the state spending, but the house leadership is believed to have blocked them.

That could leave it up to the Governor to either make amendatory vetoes to the plan, or call lawmakers back into session.

Moffitt says balancing the budget is up to the legislature under the state Constitution, and he says that's where his colleagues failed.
