Trees and Power Lines Take Brunt of Sunday Night Storm

Severe weather that moved through the Galesburg area Sunday night blew down trees and power lines, leaving hundreds without electricity.


There was also a report to the National Weather Service from the Knox County Sheriff's Department of a tornado on the ground at 9:26 p-m, two miles east of Rio.  There were no immediate reports of injuries. Law enforcement reported trees and power lines down in Galesburg and East Galesburg, and across Knox County. A 58 mile an hour wind gust was reported at the Galesburg Municipal Airport at 9:20 Sunday night.


Precipitation totaled at least a quarter of an inch before midnight Sunday, and there's currently a flash flood watch in effect for Knox, Fulton, Stark and Peoria Counties through Monday night.


Ameren IP has reduced the number of power outages in the Galesburg area to fewer than 200. As of 5:00 this morning there were 51 Ameren customers without electricity in Galesburg, 34 in Oquawka, 25 in Avon, 19 in Gerlaw, 18 in Monmouth, and fewer than ten outages in other towns around the area.


More rain and thunderstorms are in the forecast for today, especially after 1:00 Monday afternoon.
