Quinn: Human Services Threatened Without Income Tax Increase to Fill Budget Gap
Governor Pat Quinn is expected to speak with legislative leaders Tuesday in hopes of hashing out a plan to fill the state's budget gap and keep human services operating.

Speaking at the Greater Chicago Food Depository in Chicago, Quinn said if more revenue doesn't come into state coffers soon, funding for things like food banks would be drastically cut when Fiscal Year 2010 begins July 1st.

Quinn says lawmakers should examine their consciences. He says he's optimistic that some will change their minds about increasing taxes.

Lawmakers have passed a budget that keeps government running, but some say it could force $7-billion in cuts.

The governor's office predicts the 50 percent cut in human services will leave up to 65,000 alcohol and substance abusers without treatment and 80,000 low-income mothers without child-care services.
